Local MP attends Open Day showcasing Skills for Life

30 November 2009

Parmjit today attended an Open Day showcasing the Skills for Life programme at Unilever Gloucester.

Trade union Unite, and Gloucester College are leading the way with the government funded Skills for Life programme at Unilever Gloucester. The two organisations have carried out similar schemes at other Companies in the past and are planning more.

At Unilever, a pilot training course has started and the open day was designed to attract people to see what is happening now, suggest courses and to sign up for further courses. Training is tailored around the shift times that the trainees work and are trained in the new Gloucester Learning Centre (specifically set up for Skills for Life) where the lecturer and PCs are supplied by Gloucester College.

All of the people who have organised, carried out or taken part in the programme are winners.  Unilever benefit from their employees learning valuable new skills and for trainees, once they have successfully completed the course, half of the time spent on training by the individual is paid back in time off.
