Parmjit meets Secretary of State for Transport
24 November 2009
Gloucester’s MP is part of a cross-party campaign to bring an ultra-light rail transport to Gloucester. The project is being run by the University of Gloucestershire and would link Gloucester and Cheltenham.
Parmjit today met with the Secretary of State for Transport, Andrew Adonis, to discuss the possibility of a light railway linking Gloucester and Cheltenham. Joining Parmjit at the meeting were Willy Ford, the Cheltenham Chamber of Commerce’s Rail Expert and a member of West Midlands Travel Watch, Professor Frank Chambers and expert in Physical Geography from the University of Gloucestershire and a member of South West Travel Watch and Michael Ratcliffe, the Chief Executive of the Cheltenham Chamber of Commerce.

Also at the meeting were Martin Horwood, the MP for Cheltenham and Laurence Robertson the MP Tewkesbury.
Parmjit said:
“Cities like Sheffield, Manchester and Newcastle have high quality light-rail or tram systems, and I think we could have the same in Gloucester. What makes The University's plan really exciting is that it would radically reduce carbon emissions, as the system recycles waste. Gloucester could become a national leader in the creation of Green Transport.
I hope Andrew Adonis will look carefully at our proposals and help us with our bid for European Union money to further test the scheme.”
